Recieved a Mailshot from an SEO Specialist? – Why you should approach with caution
As a website owner you will probably be used to receiving a lot of emails with people trying to sell you stuff, however not understanding about Search Engine Optimisation and Internet Marketing you should approach any email you receive with extreme caution, Although we are an SEO specialist company, we still get these messages from supposed ‘Specialists’ telling us they can improve our rankings, our clients that rank generally well receive them and if you take a look at Googles advice even they say they receive them, the below is straight from Googles webmaster advice for search engine optimisation:
Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue.
Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:
“Dear google.com,
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories…”
Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for “burn fat at night” diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.
So when are these emails genuine and when are they not?
If you take a further look into the emails you might notice a number of things.
- The email isn’t directly addressed to yourself, it contains no information about your company, what you do or how they can help you specifically meaning you have just been sent a mailshot, you might not even need SEO
- A lot of these emails come from people who have an email address @gmail.com or @yahoo.com etc – this is a likely sign that they don’t actually even have a website themselves, are they a proven company or just someone trying to scam you?
- They are emailing you… whilst SEO is a very competitive industry (every SEO company uses SEO as part of their marketing) this suggests that they haven’t even got an SEO campaign themselves, if their services were so much better than what you have now wouldn’t they be bringing in leads through a good solid search engine optimisation and marketing campaign?
- Many of these so called ‘SEO Specialists’ don’t even leave a phone number, with something as important as your monthly marketing budget do you think that just email contact is sufficient to talk about your campaign?
Conclusion
You should always look to a professional and established SEO company, use their website to identify first of all if they are the real deal, what they have to offer and if this gives you a good first impression, you will need to make sure contact and support is there from the first instance – your money and your business is important, make sure you know exactly what you are getting and what to expect from your campaign.
